The MexicanHillTown...
SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE
6 DAYS $375 PER PERSON
Known as the Mexican Hill Town, San Miguel is so picturesque and the climate so divine that it has become an artists' and retirees' mecca. The magnificent Gothic style pink cantera stone Cathedral, landmark of San Miguel, was designed by a self-trained Indian who drew his plans in the sand. At every turn the many flower filled patios, the quaint shops and bubbling fountains will delight you. Pack your walking shoes for exploring the many cobblestone streets and do bring plenty of film.
DAY 1 - Your journey begins as our chartered motor coach crosses into Mexico traveling over a recently completed four lane highway, then through ranch and farmland to Montemorelos, the center of a rich citrus area, where we pause for lunch. Continue through the picturesque Santa Rosa Canyon. Overnight at the Las Palmas Midway Inn in Matehuala.
DAY 2 - On we go by-passing the city of San Luis Potosi and into Dolores Hidalgo, where we visit Father Hidalgo’s church and the tile shops surrounding the square. You will also visit a tile and pottery shop on the outskirts of Dolores. Arrive into San Miguel for a late lunch, after which your guide will orient you to this Mexican Hill Town with a walking tour. Later, explore on your own or just relax on the square where you are apt to meet one of the many retirees who call San Miguel home. They will enjoy telling you about retiring in Mexico. You will have fun tonight choosing your own little intimate restaurant. Just follow the soft strumming sound of guitars. Overnight at the Posada de San Francisco in San Miguel de Allende.
DAY 3 - Board your coach this morning to motor over rolling hills to Guanajuato, the subterranean city where the narrow cobblestone streets once were riverbeds. Small lanes traversed only by pedestrians are so narrow that lovers can kiss from opposite balconies. Our visit to the statue of Pipila affords a panoramic view of the city reminding many of cities in Spain. For two and a half centuries the mines of Guanajuato produced twenty percent of the world's silver. Our city tour includes the tree shaded Plaza de Reforma, the two story colorful market place where the famous Guanajuato pottery can be found, and the Church of Valenciana. Arrive back about 6:00p.m. to the Posada de San Francisco in San Miguel de Allende.
NOTE: The tour to Guanajuato is an all day tour and is included but optional...those who wish to spend this day in San Miguel may do so. Day 3 and Day 4 may be interchanged.
DAY 4 - Awaken to the ringing of church bells, the singing of the birds in the tree shaded plaza. The day is free to enjoy, relax and hang loose. Explore to your heart’s content or shop and shop and shop. Overnight at the Posada de San Francisco in San Miguel de Allende.
DAY 5 - Pack up this morning wistfully leaving San Miguel behind. Visit Queretaro with its 250 year old aqueducts and Jo’s favorite spot, the Convent of the Cross, designed by the same Franciscan architect-monk who designed the Alamo in Texas. Time to shop for the famous "opals" of the region before leaving for San Luis Potosi where Jo has a wonderful surprise for you so be on time at 8:00p.m. These musicians will steal your heart away.
