Once the capitol of Texas, this mile high city is so close and so special. Saltillo, capitol of the state of Coahuila, is affectionately called by some the “AdobeCity” because so many of the older buildings were made of adobe then covered with plaster. Once considered the “Athens of Mexico”, Saltillo still boasts coffee shops book stores and an overall feeling of culture. Saltillo sports a magnificent cathedral, central plaza, lush gardens, museums of top quality and a bustling market all combining to make Saltillo a very interesting destination.
DAY 1 - Leave the Rio Grande Valley and head west through Reynosa over the divided auto-pista for Monterrey where we pause for lunch before continuing to Saltillo. Visit the sarape shop where master weavers still dye the wool and weave the beautiful sarapes that have made Saltillo famous. Nearby, the Cathedral, dedicated to St. James the Elder, boasts an impressive main door - an extraordinary work of art made of cedar, mahogany and pine and adorned with the carved images of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. When the door was built, the cost was only $45.00. Time permitting, visit the Bird Museum before checking in at our hotel where exquisite gardens invite you to stroll. Overnight at the Camino Real in Saltillo.
DAY 2 - After an included continental breakfast, visit the downtown bustling market - a true market for the locals. A favorite stop is at the very front of the market where a few caged birds will entertain you. Visit the Museum of the Desert before actually experiencing the desert as we drive to Parras. This “Oasis of Coahuila” has as its main industries, a blue jean fabric plant, a multitude of wonderful small candy shops and the first winery established in the Americas. Lunch will be included before we tour as much as possible of this garden spot. Return to Saltillo in the afternoon. Overnight at the Camino Real in Saltillo. CB, L
DAY 3 - Take one last panoramic view of Saltillo as we circle above the city. We just can’t leave without seeing how adobe bricks and Saltillo tile are made. Later, start home but not without stopping to buy “pan de pulque”, a bread made only in this area that is leavened with the alcoholic beverage “pulque”. CB
